You’ve heard the saying “show me your friends and I’ll show you your future”, right? Well that’s because your friends and the people you socialize with, play a huge role in your successes and lack thereof. The social networks you choose to be a part of (and I’m not just talking digital networks such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram) can also shape you. Are you affiliated with any positive social groups — maybe a local meetup crew, a run club, a sorority, or even the Women of Washington Redskins? If so, you may be on the right track to positively shaping your life! Here’s how.
Healthy or unhealthy behaviors can be contagious. Ever been in a group of people whose energy rubbed off on you? Whether it’s a team project full of negative nancys or a group exercise class filled with fireballs of positivity, the vibes are definitely contagious. Being “infected” by other people’s enthusiasm can be a very good thing. Simply put, when you hang out with happy people that have good intentions and practice healthy behaviors, you tend to feel happier, have more energy, and have better health practices.
Being involved with social groups even promotes the ability to make better decisions—including for your physical health. This is what some researchers have coined the “social cure.” Why? According to researchers, social networks help us to feel more supported and respected, and they also help us feel more competent. The more support and the respect we feel with involvement in a social group, the stronger sense of personal control we feel over our lives. I think we all can agree that making healthy choices requires a certain degree of self-control.
Social networks act as a social support system. When you can depend on others to motivate and hold you accountable, you are more likely to make decisions that lead to success. Make your goals public within your social group. You’ll notice that the positive responses will fuel your desire to succeed.
